The future of work in 2021: Work transformed This session is likely to showcase what’s already changed and is working and what lessons have been ...

It was her twins’ seventh birthday, and the executive vice president and CIO of Synchrony was scrambling to get home to join the festivities. The day also took on new contours as a routine meeting exploring AWS Workspace technology subsequently laid the groundwork for the firm’s near-real-time transition to remote work as COVID-19 took hold as a global pandemic.Synchrony sent its 4,000 knowledge workers home on March 13 and followed up with a plan that set up 12,000 call center employees with remote operations a scant two weeks ...
Global VPN downloads Surge in 2020
Repressive regimes’ regulatory demands and remote working see virtual private network usage rocket over the past 12 months Driven by particular demand in Arab countries, worldwide virtual private network (VPN) downloads reached 277 million in 2020, according to research by technology provider Atlas VPN. According to data based on the company’s VPN adoption index, it was not surprising to find that technology preventing the tracking of users’ online activities from parties such as hackers, internet service providers (ISPs) or probably more likely government agencies would find favour in territories such as the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Oman and Saudi Arabia. ...
Cybersecurity Threat: The West Sends Old Servers to Foreign Countries
Western countries have been criticised for their routine habit of disposing old servers, filled to the brim with sensitive information, in foreign countries, opening up the opportunity to hackers to test their skills in extracting private information and holding it for ransom. Often it is the case that the old servers are being replaced with newer hardware equipment and workstations, and being sold to private companies in distant locations without completely removing confidential and sensitive data that have the potential to identify individuals and impair government systems. Alas, this unguarded data is a hacker’s jackpot. An anonymous source has shed ...

New York City proposes regulating algorithms used in hiring
In 1964, the Civil Rights Act barred the humans who made hiring decisions from discriminating on the basis of sex or race. Now, software often contributes to those hiring decisions, helping managers screen résumés or interpret video interviews. That worries some tech experts and civil rights groups, who cite evidence that algorithms can replicate or magnify biases shown by people. In 2018, Reuters reported that Amazon scrapped a tool that filtered résumés based on past hiring patterns because it discriminated against women. Legislation proposed in the New York City Council seeks to update hiring discrimination rules for the age of ...
